Customizing Report Balloon Symbols in Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 5.0

In some cases when BOM balloons are displayed for a repeat region, it is desirable to have the balloons appear as a symbol other than the default circle symbol. The procedure below demonstrates how to create and use custom BOM symbols.

This document is broken into two tasks:

Task 1 – Create Custom Balloon Symbol

Task 2 – Display Customized BOM Balloons

Task 1 – Create Custom Balloon Symbol

1. Click Openand retrieve the caster_assembly.drw drawing into session.

2. To create a custom symbol, click the Annotate tab from the Drawing Ribbon. Click the arrow to expand the Format Group and then click Symbol Gallery.

3. From the SYM GALLERY menu manager, click Define and type in Balloon as the new symbol name and press ENTER.

4. Create the new balloon symbol.

·  Click Insert > Note. From the menu manager, change the justification to Center and then click Make Note.

·  Select any location to make the note. Type in index in the Enter NOTE input window.

·  Press ENTER twice to complete typing text. The new note should now appear in the window. Click Done/Return

·  Sketch the symbol geometry as required using the Sketch tools. In this example, an ellipse is created as shown.

If text notes are entered with a backslash before and after them, they become “variable text” notes. Variable text allows for preset values to be defined as symbol attributes and selected when placing the symbols on drawings. Preset values may be used for each of these notes. If the text in a note is to remain constant when placed, do not use any backslashes “”.

5. Configure the symbol General Attributes.

·  Click Attributes from the SYMBOL EDIT menu manager. The SYMBOL DEFINITION ATTRIBUTES dialog box will appear.

·  Define the FreeLeft Leader, and Right Leader placement types.

·  Select the Variable – Drawing Units as the Symbol Instance Height option.

6. Configure the symbol Variable Text.

·  Click the Var Text tab from the dialog box.

·  Type in rpt.index in the Preset values for: index text box, as shown.

7. Complete the symbol configuration.

·  Click OK from the SYMBOL DEFINITION ATTRIBUTES dialog box.

·  Click Done from the SYMBOL EDIT menu.

·  Click Done from the SYM GALLERY menu.

The Var Text tab in the Symbol Definition Attributes dialog box is used to define the parameter that will be called out by the variable text note. When the symbol is placed, the system will replace the variable text with the corresponding information being called out by the parameter. Any of the system parameters for drawings or user-defined parameters can be used.

For example, if one would like to call out component names in a BOM Balloon, the variable text can be defined to something like “comp_name”, and the preset value/variable parameter would then be “”.

NOTE: Note parameters cannot be used for the value of variable text.

Task 2 – Display Customized BOM Balloons

1. Set the Repeat Region for BOM Balloons.

·  Select the Table tab from the Drawing ribbon.

·  Click BOM Balloons from the Balloons group.

·  From the BOM BALLOONS Menu Manager, click Set Region > Custom.

·  Select anywhere within the Repeat Region as shown.

2. From the GET SYMBOL menu, click Name > Balloon. This will retrieve the newly created symbol that was named “Balloon”.

3. To show the BOM Balloons in the drawing view, click Create Balloon > By View.

4. Select the view from the graphics window.

5. Click OK from the CUSTOM BALLOON HEIGHT dialog box to accept the default height value.

6. Notice that the BOM Balloons are now displayed.

7. Use a different user-defined BOM symbol.

·  From the BOM BALLOONS menu manager, click Alt Symbol.

·  Select the balloon(s) whose symbol is to be replaced, and then click OK from the SELECT box.

·  From the GET SYMBOL menu, click Name > PRE_WF5_SQUARE.

8. Click OK to accept the default balloon height and noticed that the balloon for index 1 is now a square.

9. Click Done from the BOM BALLOONS menu.

NOTE: In order to replace a BOM Balloon with a different symbol, the repeat region parameters displayed by the new symbol must match the old symbol. That is, if the original only displays the index in the balloon, the new symbol cannot display the index and the quantity together; only the index.
